‘The Haven’ is a house that fits both quiet seclusion as well as entertainment with friends with a very direct relation to the landscape. The area of the house grew by over 1000 sqft during mid construction with several other changes. The house towers over 50’ off the ground ensuring unobstructed views of the Mahaweli River. The final structure reflects the mix of both indoor and outdoor spaces that emphasize the scenery on the outside.
Construction of ‘The Haven’ was a pleasant challenge that we met. The cut and fill had to be minimized, plan underwent several alterations during construction due to the topography of the underlying rock on which the house is anchored. Several retaining walls were erected to increase the flat land accessible around the house. Basement is enclosed by a 60’ long RCC retaining wall capped on one end by an exposed Random rubble wall. The double height living space faces a concrete lattice towards the view of the sky, with an almost cave-like space encased by a fairfaced RCC wall.
The two courtyards add to the lively looks of the house by creating a greater permanence for its residents, prioritizing the best sunlight and scenic views, while valuing the elements available in the surroundings. The entire project was a huge success, structured according to the satisfactory of the clients.
